Seniors
The Seniors Tournament was introduced the same as the Teen Tournament, in April of 1987. The format is the same, but this one features 15 contestants over the age of 50. The principal reason for having such a tournament is that the reflexes of these seniors makes it difficult for them to compete against younger, faster players, despite their knowledge base.
After the introduction of the College Tournament, the Seniors Tournament moved from the spring to the summer, near the end of the season.
In 1993, the Seniors final coincided with episode #2000.
In the '95-96 season, the Tournament moved to December 1995 in order for the 1st International Tournament to be aired that summer.
The Seniors Tournament was the first of the regularly scheduled yearly tournaments to be retired. The final Seniors Tournament was held during the '96-'97 season. No mention of it being the last airing was made on air. The decision was made well in advance of the next scheduling airing, though, as the final Seniors champ David Cuneo was informed about it during his ToC taping.
